In this hands-on workshop, students will learn the art of filmmaking from script to screen. Students will work together as a film crew to generate ideas, work with actors, master camera, lighting, and sound techniques, as well as learn the basics of editing. All of this will result in the production of our very own short film! Students will also spend their lunch break watching and discussing a collection of classic films in our in-house cinema. No prior filmmaking experience is required! (Class size: 8 – 12)

Intermediate Filmmaking: Stranger Things

Have experience making films? Love sci-fi? Ready to take the next step to improve your craft? In this hands-on workshop, aspiring filmmakers will learn how to bring their projects to the next level. Students will learn elements of film, editing, and cinematographic theory used by master filmmakers to tell compelling science fiction stories. Students will study Stranger Things and similar content with the objective of planning and producing an original sci-fi short film. Filmmaking 1 or previous experience required. (Class size: 8 – 12)

Dates: 7/23 – 7/27 + 7/30 – 8/3 (TWO WEEK SESSION)

Editing with Premier Pro (MS)

Learn to edit your video footage like a professional. This hands-on workshop will cover the interface, controls, and features of the industry-standard software Adobe Premiere Pro. Students will work with a wide range of professional footage to learn what it takes to bring a project through to the final cut! (Class size: 8 – 12)

Screenwriting I

Students will learn the fundamentals of screenwriting from format to techniques to story structure. Students will analyze the work of successfully produced screenplays to learn what it takes to write for film and television, as well as receive valuable feedback from their peers and their instructor as they create their own original short, feature, or television scripts! No previous screenwriting experience is required. Students will be expected to write a large portion of their script outside of class. (Class Size: 7 – 10)

Cinematography Intensive – Closed

Cinematography is fundamental to visual storytelling. In this hands-on course, you will learn how to take your films to the next level, creating a sleek and professional look. Students will learn the language of visual storytelling through composition, lighting, color theory and movement, as well as learning how to properly use camera equipment such as cameras, lenses, and mounts. Whether you want to be a director, writer, set designer, or more, this course will provide knowledge and techniques that aspiring filmmakers need to improve their craft. Filmmaking 1 or filmmaking experience recommended. (Class size 7 – 10)

Sketch Comedy Writing Workshop

Got some funny ideas? Whether they’re just in your head or on paper, now’s the time to let them out and make them real. In this writing class for high school students, learn the fundamentals of comedy sketches – creating characters, exploring scene work and structure. Learn some tips and hints, and get feedback on how to create comedy pieces like you see on Saturday Night Live, Key & Peele, Amy Schumer and so much more. You’ll work on sketches, monologues and short film ideas to build up a portfolio of ideas… and have fun doing it. (Class size 7 – 12)

Reel World Filmmaking: Music Documentary

In this one-of-a-kind class, students gain real world experience by creating a short film for Jazz House Kids. Students will be guided through every phase of a professional production, including development, pre-production, lighting, shooting, interviewing, and editing. Students will shoot young musicians and music legends at various locations around town, including Jazzfest! Learn how to shoot live music and incorporate it into documentary storytelling. Build your portfolio, develop marketable filmmaking skills, and create a film for positive social change! (Class size: 6 – 12)

Community Service credit available upon request. Filmmaking Experience recommended.

For young screenwriters looking to improve their craft, this writing workshop will help make their scripts stand out. Students will dig deeply into story analysis and character development while creating their own original short, feature or television scripts. While inside our “writer’s room” environment, students will be able to give and receive invaluable feedback on their stories from experienced and like-minded writers. Basic screenwriting knowledge is required, and students will be expected to write a large portion of their script outside of class. (Class size 7-10)

From Radiolab to The Adventure Zone, podcasting has changed the face of our modern media landscape. This hands-on course will show you how to develop and produce your very own show in the Montclair Film Storytelling Studio! Learn mic technique, mixing, post-production, and what makes for an interesting podcast from our guest instructor, Frank Hablawi of Non-Productive.com. (Class size 7 – 12)
