Middle School Workshops

Intro to Improv

Dates: July 5 – July 14
Time: 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Cost: $202 for Members*/$225 for non-Members*

The fundamentals of improvisation are the fundamentals of life. Listening, agreeing, forwarding action, taking care of your partner and so much more! You’ll be introduced to those lessons as you play games as well as create characters and scenes using a variety of improv and creativity exercises. The goal is to have a group performance at the end of our 8 day session. Number one rule is to have fun! (Class size: 10 – 15)

Filmmaking Bootcamp – WAITLIST ONLY

Dates: July 17 – July 28
Time: 2:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Cost: $337 for Members*/$375 for non-Members*

In this hands-on workshop, students will learn the art of filmmaking from script to screen. Students will work together as a film crew to generate ideas, work with actors, master camera, lighting, and sound techniques, as well as learn the basics of editing. All of this will result in the production of our very own short film! No prior filmmaking experience is required! (Class size: 8 – 12)

In this hands-on workshop, students will learn the art of filmmaking from script to screen. Students will work together as a film crew to generate ideas, work with actors, master camera, lighting, and sound techniques, as well as learn the basics of editing. All of this will result in the production of our very own short film! Students will also spend their lunch break watching and discussing a collection of classic films in our in-house cinema. No prior filmmaking experience is required! (Class size: 8 – 12)

Editing with Premier Pro

Dates: August 21 – August 25
Time: 10:00 – 12:30
Cost: $180 for Members*/$200 for Non-members*

Learn to edit your video footage like a professional. This hands-on beginner workshop will cover the interface, controls, and features of the industry-standard software Adobe Premiere Pro. Students will work with a wide range of professional footage to learn what it takes to bring a project through to the final cut! (Class size: 8 – 12)

Looking to bring your films to the next level? In this accelerated workshop, students will learn the art of cinematography in order to give your films a sleek and professional look. Students will discover how to use the camera to tell their stories, along with the technical know-how to get their films shot. Sketch Comedy Writing

Got some funny ideas? Whether they’re just in your head or on paper, now’s the time to let them out and make them real. In this writing class for high school students, learn the fundamentals of comedy sketches – creating characters, exploring scene work and structure. Learn some tips, hints and get feedback on how to create comedy pieces like you see on Saturday Night Live, Key & Peele, Amy Schumer and so much more. You’ll work on sketches, monologues and short film ideas to build up a portfolio of ideas… and have fun doing it. (Class size: 8 – 12)

COMEDY BOOTCAMP: Improv & Sketch Comedy Writing

This unique beginner’s class combines exercises in writing and improvisation. Learn the rules of improvisation – good listening, agreement, forward action, amongst others – and how to take the crazy ideas in your head and shape them into engaging, interesting characters and stories. Writers will be challenged to make discoveries through improvisation and improv enthusiasts will have fun translating their thoughts and discoveries to the page. Students will get a great opportunity to be inventive and creative – while having a load of fun.

Improv II

Improv II is for the improviser who is ready to take their work to the next level. We will continue to fine-tune various improv techniques such as character, agreement, listening, physicality, emotion, heightening, and object and environment work. We will apply these skills to improvised scene work and short-form games. The students will also learn improv show hosting skills. The two-week course will culminate in an end of session showcase for friends and family. (Class Size: 10 – 15)

In this beginner screenwriting workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of screenwriting from format, to techniques, to story structure. Students will analyze the work of successfully produced screenplays to learn what it takes to write for film and television, as well as receive valuable feedback from their peers and their instructor as they create their own original short, feature, or television scripts! No previous screenwriting experience is required. Students will be expected to write a large portion of their script outside of class. (Class Size: 7 – 10)

For young screenwriters looking to improve their craft, this writing workshop will help make their scripts stand out. Students will dig deeply into story analysis and character development while creating their own original short, feature or television scripts. While inside our “writer’s room” environment, students will be able to give and receive invaluable feedback on their stories from experienced, and like-minded writers. Basic screenwriting knowledge is required, and students will be expected to write a large portion of their script outside of class. (Class size: 7 – 10)

Reel World Filmmaking

Dates: July 17 – July 28

In this one-of-a-kind class, students will have the opportunity to gain real world experience by creating a short film for the Montclair Community Farm Coalition. Students will be guided through every phase of a professional production including development, pre-production, lighting, shooting, interviewing, and editing. Learn documentary film production, build your portfolio, and create a film for positive social change! (Grades 10 – 12) (Class size: 6 – 12)

Students will learn elements of film, editing, and cinematography used by master filmmakers to set their films apart. Students will also learn how to effectively and efficiently plan and produce their films by generating an original short film. (Class size: 8 – 12)
