Behind the Screen: Media Careers 101

A day of FREE one hour seminars on careers in filmmaking by industry professionals. These seminars are for high school and college aged students.

SEMINARS INCLUDE:

Documentary Storytelling, 10 – 11am (room 1070): Documentary Producer/Director/Editor and Montclair resident Julie Winokur (Bring it to the Table) leads a discussion about documentary filmmaking with Valerie Thomas (long-time collaborator with Jonathan Demme – Cousin Bobby, Madiba), Dawn Porter (Gideon’s Army– premiering at Sundance 2013) and Thom Powers (filmmaker and MFF Artistic Director).

Production: Wardrobe and Sets, 10 – 11am (room 1040): Noted Set Decorator and Wardrobe Designers discuss how they create the look for a film/TV show.  Susan Skoog moderates a discussion with Jackie Jacobson Scarfo (Pan Am, Smash), Dan Lawson (The Good Wife, Revolutionary Road) and Danielle Hollywood (Law and Order).

Broadcast News, 11:15 – 12:15pm (room 1070): Colbert Report Managing Producer Jeff Cooperman and distinguished TV news professionals Jim Axelrod (CBS Evening News), Elizabeth Fischer (NBC News), William Branghman (PBS Need to Know), discuss the challenges of daily network journalism and job opportunities.

Production: Lighting and Camera, 11:15 – 12:15pm (room 1040): A DP and his team describe how they work together, featuring noted Director of Photography Tom Houghton (Rescue Me, 30 Rock.)

Online Content Creation, 12:30pm – 1:30pm (room 1070): Who/What/How programming is currently successful online. Susan Skoog moderates a discussion with Sam Morrill (Sr. Content and Community Manager at Vimeo) and Jorge Rivera (Giants Beware).

Camera Demo, 12:30pm – 1:30pm (room 1040): ARRI CSC showcases the ARRI Alexa and D-21. ARF & Co shows the RED.

Working as an Actor, 1:45pm – 2:45pm (room 1070): Getting yourself in front of the camera. Casting director Jill Greenberg Sands (A Bronx Tale, A Rivers Runs Through It) speaks with fellow casting director Jennifer Euston (The Dictator, Bridesmaids, Sleepwalk with Me).

Editing, 1:45pm – 2:45pm (room 1040): Tim Squyres, NJ resident and long-time collaborator with Director Ang Lee discusses career and craft with Mark Fitzmartin (ARF & Co.).

Producing, 3 – 4pm (room 1070): What does a Producer do? How do you break in as a Producer? Filmmaker and TV producer Susan Skoog leads a discussion with Mark Kamine (The Sopranos), Mari Jo Winkler (The Dictator, No Reservations) and Mike S. Ryan (Junebug).

Visual Effects, 3 – 4pm (room 1040): Making the unreal realer, and the real more beautiful. Mark Fitzmartin leads a discussion with Joyce Boll (LOOK effects), Vikkal Parikh (Ataboy Studios) and Chris Decker (VFX producer, Iron Man 2).

Directing, 4:15 – 5:15pm (room 1070): Directors working in narrative filmmaking discuss their work, careers and career paths. Conrad Fink speaks with Gary Donatelli (One Life to Live) and Vince Misiano (Medium, West Wing, Law and Order)

Animation, 4:15 – 5:15pm (room 1040): The creative team behind Dora the Explorer and Go, Diego, Go! discuss taking a project from script through final animation.

You may attend as many as you’d like but please note that some of the seminars overlap so please check the times.
