Filmmaking (High School)

In this hands-on workshop, students will study the art of filmmaking from script to screen. Students will work together as a film crew to generate ideas, work with actors, master camera, lighting, and sound techniques, as well as learn the basics of editing. All of this will result in the production of our very own short film! (Class size: 7 – 10)

Screenwriters Workshop (High School)

Do you love visual storytelling? Through the study of successful scripts and films, we’ll talk about screenwriting craft elements and how best to utilize these techniques in your own stories. We’ll do some generative writing and revision activities. Students will create their own original short, feature, or television scripts, and present their work during table reads, where they will receive valuable feedback from their peers and instructor. Students should have a working knowledge of script format and a sense of basic story structure. Screenwriting I or Screenwriting 101 Intensive recommended. (Class size 8 – 10)

Screenwriting 101 Intensive

In this multi-generational screenwriting intensive, beginner students can learn the basics of screenplay formatting, outlining, and narrative structure. Students will analyze short films and professional screenplays. No previous screenwriting experience required. Students will leave this workshop with the basic knowledge to enter Montclair Film’s Middle School, High School or Adult Screenwriting Workshop.

Editing with Premiere Pro I (Ages 15+)

This hands-on beginner workshop will cover the interface, controls, and features of the industry-standard software Adobe Premiere Pro. Students will learn how to import files, combine video, still images, and music to tell their stories. (Class size: 7 – 11)

Editing with Premiere Pro II (Ages 15+)

Ready to take your editing skills to the next level? In addition to editing theory, students will review basic editing techniques and shortcuts, and practice using Filters and Transitions, Basic Color Correction, Sound Leveling and Mixing and more! Editing with Premiere Pro I or equivalent required. (Class size: 7 – 11)

Podcast like a Pro I (Ages 15+)

From Radiolab to The Adventure Zone, podcasting has changed the face of our modern media landscape. This hands-on course will give you the background and technical skills to begin developing and producing your very own show in the Montclair Film Storytelling Studio! Learn mic technique, mixing, post-production, and what makes for an interesting podcast from our guest instructor, Frank Hablawi of Non-Productive.com. Upon completion of this course, you will be certified to rent Montclair Film’s state of the art storytelling studio at a discounted rate for your personal podcasts! (Class size 7 – 12)

Podcast like a Pro II: Practicum (Ages 15+)

Develop and produce your own Podcast in Montclair Film’s state of the art Storytelling studio! This practicum builds on the basics you learned in our introductory class, Podcast like a Pro I, enabling students to leverage the skills they’ve acquired there to pitch, produce, and publish their own shows. Under the guidance of our guest instructor Frank Hablawi, students will produce their own professional Podcasts. Included in the workshop cost is studio time between classes to record your personal material to develop in class. Upon completion of this workshop, students should have 1 – 3 completed episodes of their podcast! Podcast Like a Pro I or special permission is required. (Class size: 8 – 10)

*This class meets every other Tuesday so that students have time between classes to record their podcast to bring to class.

Cinematography Intensive 

Cinematography is fundamental to visual storytelling. In this hands-on course, you will learn how to take your films to the next level, creating a sleek and professional look. Students will learn the language of visual storytelling through composition, lighting, color theory and movement, as well as learning how to properly use camera equipment such as cameras, lenses, and mounts. Filmmaking 1 or filmmaking experience recommended.

Voiceover is everywhere! In addition to learning about the multi-faceted voiceover industry, in this class we will explore what makes voiceover performances compelling and will begin developing the tools necessary to execute them. Topics will include script analysis and interpretation, inflection, pacing, context, vocal quality and finding your signature sound. Students will get to perform both commercial and narration copy in a classroom setting as well as in the studio. (Class size: 8 – 10)
