Filmmaking Bootcamp

In this hands-on filmmaking workshop, students will learn the art of filmmaking from script to screen. Students will work together as a film crew to generate ideas, work with actors, and master camera, lighting, and sound techniques. Students will also learn the basics of editing in Adobe Premiere Pro. In each class, students will work both behind and in front of the camera, in both exterior and interior locations, so that they can gain as much experience as possible. Final films will be screened for friends and family in Cinema505 on the last day of class! No prior filmmaking experience is required. (Class size:8-12)

Middle School Screenwriting

In this dynamic screenwriting class, students will learn the fundamentals of screenwriting: from format, to techniques, to story structure. Students will analyze the work of successfully produced screenplays to learn what it takes to write for film and television, as well as receive valuable feedback from their peers and their instructor as they create their own original script! By the end of the workshop, students will have the tools they need to write powerful and compelling screenplays. No previous screenwriting experience is required. (Class Size: 8 – 10)

Special Effects Make-up (11+)

This hands- on workshop will teach you how to create and apply film quality Special Effects Make-up. Practice working with professional color wheels to create realistic cuts, bruises, and ghoulish characters. You will even learn to create and apply professional 3D appliances like scars and bullet holes. Bring home your materials to take your horror films to a new level — or just knock ‘em dead on Halloween! (Class Size: 10 – 16)

Editing with Premier Pro I (11+)

Great editing skills can really make a film come alive! In this hands-on beginner workshop, students will learn the interface, controls, and features of the industry-standard software, Adobe Premiere Pro. Our instructors will teach you how to log footage, create a rough cut, add titles and credits, implement transitions, work with sound, and even play with color. Students will also begin to learn the craft and language of editing.
*** Note: No prior editing skills are required, however, it is recommended that if you are a beginner you take both Edit 1 and 2 (Class size: 8-12.)

Editing With Premier Pro II (11+)

For students who have completed Editing with Premier Pro I or have a basic understanding of Premier Pro, this course will continue to work on Editing fundamentals while introducing new skills such as Filters and Transitions, Basic Color Correction, Sound Leveling, Mixing and more! Editing with Premier Pro I recommended. (Class size 8-12)

Film Studies

Do you love watching and analyzing movies? The Friday Film Club is a chance to meet like-minded kids and discuss the art of cinematic storytelling. Curated by Montclair Film and led by a professional filmmaker, students will screen and analyze a range of films from classics to age appropriate independent features. Go behind the screen to learn about the artistic choices and the creative tools that filmmakers use to tell their stories. Whether you are a filmmaker, film critic, or just a fan, you’ll never watch movies the same again!  Note: PG-13 films will be included. (Class size 10-20)

Improv

The fundamentals of improvisation are the fundamentals of life. Listening, agreeing, forwarding action, taking care of your partner, and so much more! You’ll be introduced to these lessons as you play games as well as create characters and scenes using a variety of improv and creativity exercises. Students will develop the ability to be spontaneous and collaborative, both of which are important acting tools. By working together on unscripted scenes, students will stimulate their imaginations and tap into their ability to think on their feet and be in the moment. The goal is to have a group performance at the end of our 10 day session. Number one rule is to have fun! (Class size: 8 – 12)

High School Filmmaking

In this hands-on workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of filmmaking and practical filmmaking skills pre-production through final film. Working together with other students, they will generate creative ideas, work with actors, and master camera, lighting, and sound techniques. The basics of editing in Adobe Premiere Pro will also be introduced. All of this will result in the production of our very own short film which will be screened in our in-house theater, Cinema505, at the end of the workshop. No prior filmmaking experience is required.(Class size: 8 – 12)
