Ninety percent of Deaf and Hard of Hearing children are raised in families with minimal knowledge of Deaf culture and American Sign Language (ASL). Shelby Bean, 25, fit that mold growing up near Denver, CO, and it wasn’t until he was recruited to play football at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC that he learned anything about being Hard of Hearing. Gallaudet is home to the only collegiate Deaf team in the world, and is the premiere institution for Deaf college students. Eight years after first arriving at Gallaudet, Shelby’s life continues to change as he coaches football and plans his wedding.
