Shot over the course of 36 years on the streets of Newark, NJ, Jon Alpert’s LIFE OF CRIME 1984-2020 is a devastating look at the toll taken by addiction and the war on drugs. Following the lives of hustlers working to earn enough money to feed their addictions, the film is a harrowing portrait of the cycles of criminality, imprisonment, and drug use that spirals ever-downward, destroying the lives and relationships of the film’s subjects through the power of relentless need. Alpert’s film is a compassionate examination of his subject’s lives that never flinches from their reality.
