One of the most powerful films in the year’s festival, STRANGER IN PARADISE takes the European refugee crisis as its central concern and literalizes the dichotomy of European anxiety—fear and anger juxtaposed against a concern for the principles of human freedom—by creating a dialogue between real, newly arrived immigrants and Europe itself, here personified by the Dutch actor Valentijn Dhaenens. The unexpected result is a scathing indictment of the rationalization of European self-interest, a mirror held up to European racism and self-satisfaction. STRANGER IN PARADISE proves that, without honesty and empathy, there can be no acceptable solution.
