UNA is director Benedict Andrews’ searing adaptation of David Harrower’s 2005 play Blackbird, telling the story of Una (Rooney Mara) and Ray (Ben Mendelsohn), whose past encounter has changed both of their lives forever. When Una arrives at Ray’s workplace in order to confront him, the past and present clash against the rocks of confusion, hurt, and the damage done. Taking past stories with a similar theme (Naboikov’s Lolita comes immediately to mind) and turning them on their collective heads, UNA refuses to release its characters from their ache and responsibility, sending two wounded souls hurtling into the unknown.
