The winner of the 2025 Palme D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Jafar Panahi’s IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT is the latest of the Director’s films to defy the restrictions of the Iranian state in order to address life under authoritarian rule. Panahi, who has been arrested and imprisoned multiple times by the Iranian government, has made one of his finest works, which takes the chance encounter of a minor car accident to build spiraling consequences and unexpected tensions, all of which underscore the impact of hidden state violence on the lives of everyday people.
