The historical understanding of women, childbirth, and mental health has always been intertwined with suspicion, terror, and community violence. These concepts have lead to the popular creation of witches and witchcraft, which have inspired countless films, exploring popular conceptions of supernatural womanhood. In her profound and powerful film WITCHES, director Elizabeth Sankey seeks understanding for another community– women who have experienced psychological complications postpartum. Isolated, misunderstood, and without adequate, compassionate health resources, the women of WITCHES share their own experiences as they look to overcome our shared historic and distorting representations.
