FREE Summer Filmmaking Lab for Newark’s Aspiring Creatives!

For Newark Students Entering Grades 10 – 12

This summer, Newark high school students will have an incredible opportunity to participate in a hands-on filmmaking lab—completely FREE! Over two immersive weeks, students will work in small groups to create short films, using professional-quality equipment, and gain practical skills to prepare for college or the workforce. Tuition, supplies, and lunch are all included!

Program Details:

  • When: July 14 – July 25, 2025 (Monday – Friday)
  • Where: Donald Payne Sr. Technical School, 498-544 W Market St, Newark
  • Application Deadline: March 21, 2025

Who Should Apply:

This program is open to students entering grades 10 through 12 who have a strong interest in filmmaking. Students must have basic filmmaking and editing experience and will be admitted by application only. Filmmakers will be expected to work independently on their films outside of class. Space is limited.

What You’ll Experience:

  • Collaborate with peers to produce professional-quality short films
  • Learn filmmaking essentials, including directing, cinematography, sound, lighting, and production design
  • Gain hands-on experience with professional-grade filmmaking equipment
  • Build a portfolio that stands out for college applications and student film festivals

Sample Schedule:

Days 1-3: Skills Training and Pre-Production

  • Learn the tools of the trade through fun, hands-on exercises in camera operation, lighting, sound, and more!
  • Brainstorm, develop, and refine your script
  • Plan your shots and scout locations
  • Organize costumes, props, and production design elements
  • Cast your film, with the option to include external talent

Days 4-8: Production

  • Work in groups to direct and shoot films under professional guidance
  • Rotate through key crew roles, such as cinematographer, producer, sound operator, and more
  • Begin editing scenes at home to stay on track

Days 9-10: Post-Production

  • Finalize your film with music, sound effects, and visual enhancements
  • Apply advanced techniques like color grading and sound design

This fully funded program is a unique chance to explore your passion for filmmaking, gain practical experience, and create standout projects for your portfolio. The program will conclude with a Red Carpet Award Ceremony at Montclair Film’s Cinema505, where students can share their films with friends and family.
